Please note: This is not a commercial site. I do not sell or appraise musical instruments. Please do not contact me to request that I identify and provide background information on a specific instrument in your possession and/or evaluate its worth. That's a job for an accredited professional appraiser, which I'm not. That said, I'll be glad to answer questions and discuss any subject I present here, so long as that one proviso is respected.

Here are some of the exciting projects I'm currently involved with

  • World Brooklyn. I'm currently consulting for the Brooklyn Children's Museum on musical instruments and traditions from around the globe for the new permanent music exhibit component of BCM's massive renovation and expansion, slated for May 2008. This is a reprise of my role in the creation of the current music exhibit, Music Mix, back in 1998. The projected music exhibit will be called World Brooklyn: Global Beats and will feature all types of musical instruments from around the world. It will also highlight the work of musicians from a variety of ethnic traditions found in Brooklyn and greater New York City. Some of the performers on tap include: Tony DeMarco, one of NYC's finest Irish fiddlers; The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York; and Gokh-Bi System, a unique West African rap group from Senegal which features the Jola akonting folk lute. (Note: An akonting will be one of the musical instruments featured in the exhibit. It's a gift of Daniel Jatta and Ulf Jägfors.)

  • Banjo Roots on MySpace. In collaboration with my good buddy Greg C. Adams, I've created a site on MYSPACE MUSIC devoted to ongoing research into the banjo's early history and its deep roots in Africa and the African Diaspora, entitled Banjo Roots: From Africa to the New World. This is the sister MYSPACE MUSIC site to my site The Akonting: A West African Ancestor of the Banjo. The new Banjo Roots site features a choice sampling of recordings and videos of early banjo tunes as well as music from African American, Caribbean and West African traditions. Here you'll also find the latest research findings on the early banjo and the rich diversity of "living" traditions of related/parallel string instruments still found throughout Africa.
