Humanitarian Resources
Amnesty International --
"Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide
movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. AI is independent of
any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any
government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights
it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights. AI has a
varied network of members and supporters around the world. At the latest count, there were more than
1.8 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every
region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different
political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where
everyone enjoys human rights." Direct Relief International -- "Since 1948, Direct Relief International has worked to improve the quality of life for people in need. We focus on health – by providing essential material resources to locally run health programs in poor areas around the world and during times of disaster. Direct Relief International is a non-profit, non-political, and non-sectarian organization that provides assistance without regard to race, ethnicity, political or religious affiliation, gender, or ability to pay. We are committed to making every dollar count – less than 1% of our support goes to administrative and fundraising expenses." Doctors Without Borders -- "Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care in nearly 70 countries.... MSF was founded in 1971 as a nongovernmental organization to both provide emergency medical assistance and bear witness publicly to the plight of the people it assists. A private nonprofit association, MSF is an international network with sections in 19 countries.... MSF's decision to intervene in any country or crisis is based solely on an independent assessment of people's needs — not on political, economic, or religious interests. MSF does not take sides or intervene according to the demands of governments or warring parties...." Human Rights Watch -- "Human Rights Watch is dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world. We stand with victims and activists to prevent discrimination, to uphold political freedom, to protect people from inhumane conduct in wartime, and to bring offenders to justice. We investigate and expose human rights violations and hold abusers accountable. We challenge governments and those who hold power to end abusive practices and respect international human rights law. We enlist the public and the international community to support the cause of human rights for all. Human Rights Watch is an independent, nongovernmental organization, supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide. It accepts no government funds, directly or indirectly." ReliefWeb -- "ReliefWeb is the world’s leading on-line gateway to information (documents and maps) on humanitarian emergencies and disasters. An independent vehicle of information, designed specifically to assist the international humanitarian community in effective delivery of emergency assistance, it provides timely, reliable and relevant information as events unfold, while emphasizing the coverage of "forgotten emergencies" at the same time.... ReliefWeb was launched in October 1996 and is administered by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)." United States Fund for UNICEF -- "Since 1947, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has supported the work of the United Nations Children's Fund by raising support for its programs and increasing public awareness of the challenges facing the world's children. As the oldest of 37 national committees for UNICEF worldwide, the U.S. Fund is part of a global effort to advance humanity with health, education, equality and protection for every child....UNICEF's lifesaving programs are funded entirely by voluntary contributions. Staff and volunteers at the U.S. Fund raise money for those programs through donations, sales of UNICEF greeting cards and gifts, joint projects with non-governmental and corporate partners, and youth action campaigns such as Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF."
